snatched this from Anna'shttp://annavivian.blogspot.com/   Did one similiar to this already, but was curious to see how many I have read and if there was any I would be interested in. The scary thing is I have read the majority of this. I hate being so predictable. *sigh*

Below is a list of the The 100 Most Popular Books on The Library Thing.

Books in BOLD are those that I've read at some time in my life.
Books in RED are those that appeal to me and I hope to read eventually.

What's your reading personality quiz

 http://www.bookbrowse.com/quiz/

Well, that fits. Except I have more time than most on reading than what I want. Interesting. I liked the one quote that was on the quiz that sums me up perfectly..
"When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes." - Erasmus.

Your Personality: All-Rounder!

Start quiz

Your responses showed you fitting equally into all four reading personalities:

Involved Reader: You don't just love to read books, you love to read about books. For you, half the fun of reading is the thrill of the chase - discovering new books and authors, and discussing your finds with others.
Exacting Reader: You love books but you rarely have as much time to read as you'd like - so you're very particular about the books you choose.
Serial Reader: Once you discover a favorite writer you tend to stick with him/her through thick and thin.
Eclectic Reader: You read for entertainment but also to expand your mind. You're open to new ideas and new writers, and are not wedded to a particular genre or limited range of authors.

Entertainment Weekly's list of the top movies of the last 25 years.

Go through their list and BOLD the ones you have seen and underline the ones you own on video or DVD.

I don't own a lot of DVDs. One, I have a book addiction to support. Cheaper and easier to rent or borrow. Other thing is that this list isn't reflective of MY types of movies anyway. There are a few like the Bourne and Lord of the Rings that just rock, but overall, these are movies I might watch once or twice and that's it. Weird how that works out and why I don't buy movies much. I save the money for those I know I will watch obsessively which is a rare thing for me anymore.

Happy 4th!

  • Jul. 3rd, 2008 at 11:50 PM
Okay, so I have ten minutes in my time zone.  But by the time anyone is awake to see this, it will be the 4th of July, Independence Day here in the U.S.

Hope you're all enjoying the day!  Be careful with those fireworks and don't eat too much.  Have lots of fun, everyone (no matter where)!

I'm depressed tonight

  • Jul. 3rd, 2008 at 11:25 PM
No reason.

This is one of those posts where I whine.  I do not need cheering up!  I am dead serious about this.   I just want to whine.

Edited 6 chapters of Magic Strikes.  Hate it with the brilliant hate of a thousand stars, but that's to be expected at this stage.

Irritated the hell out of one of my BFFs

Brainstormed ideas for Club, a funny horror, with Jill who swore up and down she'll work with me on it

Downloaded Tabaxi race plug in for Oblivion, made a half-kitty girl, and sniped people from the dark using sneak skill

Watched Sheer Genius

Marinated steaks for tomorrow in Corona (4 steaks, one bottle of beer overnight, in the morning an hour before grilling, a handfull of brown sugar, salt, pepper, sprinkle, let stand for an hour, grill.)

Depressed as all get out.

There is a kind of weariness that periodically mugs me.  I used to get it at my other job too, a sort of exhasution from perpetual paranoia of failure.  No matter how much I try, I can't resist the habitual cycle of worrying that's particular to many Russians: what if I never make the list again, what if the third book tanks, what if the new series tanks, etc etc etc.  And running headfirst into the same worries time after time after time makes me really tired.  Tonight, I'm just tired.

All my books are in my laptop.

More importantly, I don't want to do anything.  I am completely and totally apathetic.  Maybe post novel ennui finally mugged me.

Well, no I lie, I want to watch Kaleido Star but Netflix just now sent it and it won't get here for awhile.

Oops.

Haven't blogged in a few days. Nothing terribly exciting. The wordcount slows to a trickle mid-week because my brain activity slows to a trickle. I'm hoping to get some good page-count this weekend so I can get this off my desk and concentrate on other things.

And...that's all I got for now.

plotting for speed

  • Jul. 3rd, 2008 at 5:50 PM
Here’s a question for the plotters versus pantzers. I realize in reality most writers fall on a sliding scale and use anything from a detailed outline, to some or none. I know I’m in the middle somewhere with a big “subject to change” sign over everything I do.

However, o experienced ones, once you have a series of deadlines that demand quick and steady production, does that mean your position on that sliding scale moves toward more careful plotting up front?  Less plotting? Or do you advance-plan your books with about the same level of detail as before?

Day 1 Without Laptop

Phoooey!

Phooey, phooey, phhoooey.  Phooey.  Phooey!

Bleh.

Phooey.
Most people willl celebrate July 4th with traveling to the beach or something of that nature. Me? I have a ton of TBR books now. ::::preens over her stack of books happily:::

Those I got:

20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill

J.R. Ward Lover Unbound and Lover Enshrined (bought used with trade credit because I can't justify paying full price on these lately from what I am hearing)

The Dark Highlander (book 5 in her highlander series) by Karen Moning

Iron Hunt by Marjorie Liu (just was release) of her new urban fantasy series

The Darkest Night and The Darkest Kiss by Gena Showalter,

Warrior Angel by Margaret And Lizz Weis (yes that Margaret of Dragonlance fame)

Key to Conflict by Talia Gryphon (new author for me)

Daemon Eyes by Camille Bacon-Smith (not sure if  listed tha tpreviously or not)

Courting Midnight by Emma Holly

Carpe demon by Julie Kenner

Path of Fate, Path of Blood, Path of Honor by Diana Pharaoh Francis

are the ones I can remember off-hand. And a few new Myth books by the late Robert Asprin (loved his first two Phule books) so I am giving these a whirl.

Already finished up 3 graphic novels, One was a total dud which I'll post about later. Other two were decent. Ditto on the posting there.

So many books...so little time...Must have more books soon.

To pup or not to pup

  • Jul. 3rd, 2008 at 3:41 PM
Just got an e-mail from our foster coordinator, one of those blanket e-mails she sends to all the foster parents. There's a German Shepherd puppy in Ohio that needs out of the shelter. I don't know if it's life or death (they usually tell us when it is), and I might not be the only one available to do it (it's a big list).

We haven't fostered a small puppy (< 6 months old) in about 30 months (since little Zack, whose two-part story can be read here and here). They're a ton of work. They usually result in sleep deprivation. They wear down my nerves to the very last nubs, and I start to see myself as a Very Nasty Person.

On the plus side:

Puppies are easier to crate than adults--they might not like it, but they rarely have a panic attack over it
Puppies are rarely a danger to cats--they tend to annoy, but are easily bullied
Puppies are quickly adopted

And puppies are...well, dammit, just look at him:

It would be a pain in the butt, but I sort of feel like we need some new life around here.  It's been almost seven months since Tiggy died, and since then I've mostly been in one deadline fog or another.  It might be nice to have something other than work demand my time and thoughts.  Having a puppy means a lot more noise in the house, but a lot of it comes in the form of laughter.

I'm going to sleep on it overnight, then ask Chris what he thinks.  He'll say, "Whatever you want, honey."

What do y'all think?  Is anyone out there on this holiday weekend eve?

UPDATE: Answer: To Pup!!  Or at least, I told the foster coordinator we would take him if no one else had offered yet.  So we'll see...

UPDATE AGAIN: He's already taken!  But I told her we'd be up for another puppy, since my workload is not insane for the next month.

Does the Weather Affect Your Writing?

  • Jul. 3rd, 2008 at 9:07 AM
It's raining, thunder/lightning here (yeah, I know but it's not bad enough to turn off the computer yet).  I live in the Seattle area where overcast is a way of life, where the gloom creeps into every corner most of the year.  I have S.A.D. to an extent, but I've discovered that too much sun makes me nervous and jittery (too much as in, without a break).

I've noticed over the years that I write better when it's gloomy and raining.  Even if I'm writing a summer scene--I just write better when the skies are dark and drizzly--maybe it's what I write.  My books have warped humor, yes, but they are dark in many ways.  I also notice that weather and environment play a big part in the narrative in my work--all my series have been regional (except for the scenes set in Otherworld), and for me the setting becomes a character in its own right.  I've had interviewers mention this to me before--how my narrative is very vivid, and I've had readers who used to live in this area write to thank me for "taking them home" for a bit.

So, how does the physical environment around you play into your work habits/actual writing?  And if you write regional material, how much do you play off of the environmental attributes of your area?

Sarah Prineas's The Magic Thief has been stealing attention from all sides long before it was published, and all it took was a little bit of stalking pestering persuasion to snag an interview with her.

Last day on the island

  • Jul. 2nd, 2008 at 1:30 PM
Wahhh, it's already time to leave my new friends at the Desert Island Keepers blog. They really know how to treat a guest.

Stop by today to see which 6 books and which 7 CDs I'd bring with me to our desert island. Maybe a few surprises.

Ongoing contest update:

Signed copy of Wicked Game: Amberkatze's Book Blog (interview and giveaway)
Blues CD giveaway: My post about Monroe's story

I'm off now to scrutinize the typeset for The Reawakened. It'll be the last time I get to make changes to it. I'm a bit sad the series is over, but sad in a good way. And as long as people are reading it, I guess it's never really over.

Alas, they don't live near Parshall or Williston.
