Sarah Addison Allen - Garden Spells

  • Mar. 19th, 2008 at 9:29 AM
First, the blurb:

Welcome to Bascom, North Carolina, where everyone has a story to tell about the Waverley women. The old house that’s been in the family for generations, the walled garden that mysteriously blooms year round, the rumors and innuendoes of dangerous loves and tragic passions. Eccentric, reclusive, or renegade, there’s not one that wasn’t somehow touched by magic.

As the town’s successful caterer, Claire has always clung closely to the Waverleys’ roots in their enchanted soil, tending the family garden from which she makes her much sought-after delicacies. She has everything she thinks she needs – until one day she finds a vine of ivy creeping into her garden and knows that everything is about to change.

Then her prodigal sister Sydney arrives with her five-year-old daughter and a dark secret she hopes to keep well hidden. And suddenly Claire’s carefully tended life is about to run gloriously out of control …

This is such a lovely book - with a beautiful sense of magic. I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked it up, but I couldn't put it down. At heart, it's about two sisters, but there's a wonderful romance (or two) woven into the story, and everything's dusted with that shimmering element of magic and enchantment. It's almost like a fairytale, but one grounded in the real world.

Have any of you read it? Thoughts? How about recommendations for other books with that same sense of magic and wonder?

Demon Night - Meljean Brook

  • Jan. 18th, 2008 at 11:27 AM
I was lucky enough to get a chance to read an advanced copy of Demon Night (out Feb 5) and boy was it good. Meljean is now officially one of my favorite authors. And this book's hero? He's wuuuuuuunderful!

Seriously, you'll love Ethan McCabe a.k.a. Drifter. If you don't believe me, go read this
excerpt where you get to Meet Drifter. Now tell me you don't want an Ethan of your own. The way he talks...I just went weak at the knees. And the love scenes - wow, just wow.

You're probably wondering what this book is about (aside from Ethan), so I'll tell you that it's part of Meljean Brook's fantastic Guardians series. Since I've read all three books, it's hard for me to judge if you can read it as a stand alone, but I definitely think you'll enjoy Demon Night a lot more if you read Demon Angel & Demon Moon first, because characters reappear, and there is an overarching plot.

If you want to read the backcover blurb & the opening chapter, follow this link to Meljean's website. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. Write like the wind, Meljean!

Tinker - Wen Spencer

I've heard lots of people recommend Tinker, but for some reason, I never actually knew what it was about for the longest time. Well, I recently fixed that. And as soon as I read the backcover blurb, I knew I'd have to read this book.
Inventor, girl genius Tinker lives in a near-future Pittsburgh which now exists mostly in the land of the elves. She runs her salvage business, pays her taxes, and tries to keep the local ambient level of magic down with gadgets of her own design.

When a pack of wargs chase an Elven noble into her scrap yard, life as she knows it takes a serious detour. Tinker finds herself taking on the Elfin court, the NSA, the Elfin Interdimensional
Agency, technology smugglers and a college-minded Xenobiologist as she tries to stay focused on what’s really important – her first date. Armed with an intelligence the size of a planet, steel toed boots, and a junk yard dog attitude, Tinker is ready to kick butt to get her first kiss.
I loved this book. Tinker is such a great character. She's a super genius, and yet she's normal enough to run around saying: "Yes! Be healed!" Tinker cried. "I am your magic god! Say Amen to me! Woohoo!" She danced around the room. "Oh yes, I am a god! The one! The only! Tinker!" after she pulls off something difficult. (Hands up if you've ever done something similiar ;) ).

The world is pretty amazing, too. Elves, magic and hoverbikes in one awesome package. Magic is only quantum physics to Tinker, and she makes even the weirdest things seem grounded and real. And yep, there's more than enough romance in the book to satisfy. But, don't take my word for it - there's a great excerpt available on the author's site.

I'm definitely looking forward to diving into
Wolf Who Rules, the sequel to Tinker.
